Situated among rolling grasslands near the historic Santa Fe Trail, the park features an International Dark Sky Park, Gold Tiered Award, with Telescope, computerized recording and photographic equipment and observatory.

In addition, one of the most extensive dinosaur trackways in North America was excavated during development of the spillway. The 170 acre surface-area lake, partnered with NM Game & Fish, is a winter resting area for waterfowl where bird watching is superb. Boating and fishing allowed March-October.
